What Is A Hangover?

The simplest definition of a hangover is the unpleasant combination of headache and nausea that follows excessive alcohol consumption. Many use the term “hangover” interchangeably with “alcohol poisoning.” While we associate both with drinking too much, they are not the same thing. Alcohol poisoning, or acute intoxication, occurs when your blood alcohol concentration reaches 0.4% or higher. This can lead to coma or death if left untreated. A hangover occurs when your body has accumulated toxins.

Is Your Home Making You Sick? When you drink, your body starts processing the alcohol immediately. Your liver metabolizes any toxins into waste products that are then excreted by other organs in your system, like your kidneys and intestines (and sometimes even breathing).
Unfortunately for us all though, there is only so much space for these toxins in our bodies! So once those organs fill up with toxic waste from processing alcohol over time, guess what happens next? You guessed it – you get a hangover!
